A controversial South African invention, a female condom-like anti-rape device, is almost ready to hit the market after months of waiting for patent verification.
The device, known as Rapex, has stirred controversy around the world but its inventor, Sonnet Ehlers, is preparing the final pre-production phase after seven years of waiting.
The controversy has raged over whether the device, which has fish-like teeth that attach to the head and shaft of the penis, is a medieval device built on a hatred of men or whether it is an easy-to-use invention that could free millions of South African women from fear of rape.
You can see pictures of the medieval device on the Rapex Image Gallery.

Who cares what it is? Women have a right to prtoect themselves and if it takes a device that chews a man's penis up then so be it.
I agree.
You know, I totally supported this device when I first heard about. But then someone told me that he feared it would be abused by women to get even with their boyfriends. I was very rude to him and told him NO WAY. Then I did an unofficial survey of my women friends. Only ONE of about 30 said she would not even consider it and about half said, yep, they would use it against the men in their lives. Not rapists. Not men committing violence against them, men who had pissed them off.
OMG!
Jeez, Gwenny, OMG is right. Your friends are little strange. Why on earth would you give that sort of access to someone with whom you were pissed off?
Frankly, Gwenny, perhaps you should look into some different friends.
Though looking through the FAQs, I found this one kind of funny:
Does this mean I cannot have sex with my husband or partner?
Yes you can, but you will not wear it when you are with your husband or partner in bed, unless you are in a violent relationship and you do get raped by your husband or partner. The choice is then yours whether to wear it or not.
Translation: If your husband's an @!$%#, feel free.

Feel free to survey your own friends. I think you will find my friends do not fall outside the norm, but that is it you and I, who would never consider it, who are not normal. ::sigh:: Like I have said in the past, I'd be a lesbian, but women are freaking CRAZY.
Frankly, Gwenny, perhaps you should look into some different friends.
Always looking. LOL
I'd be a lesbian, but women are freaking CRAZY.
LOL, and the breasts get in the way.
LOL, and the breasts get in the way.
ROFLMAO.
Sorry, Gwenny, but because a few psychopaths will use the product for bad doesn't mean everybody else shouldn't have the right to use it. Would your friends stab their boyfriends they were mad at? Then let's not have knives anymore...

We aren't talking psychopaths, here. We are talking "normal" "average" women. Career women. . .from 20ish to middle age. All said they would consider it. I was floored. And then I thought back to some of the stuff I've seen in my life bouncing between classes and races. I think a majority of lower middle to lowest lower class are capable of this. ::sigh::
And there's a BIT of difference between outlawing tools that have many uses and my saying I don't support the use of a device intended for only one purpose. NOW, if you had said "would your girlfriends try to strangle their boyfriends with their sanitary napkins . . ."
But that is not my only fear. I feel that these would not, ultimately, provide that much protection. Especially in a society that devalues women. I've been raped, by someone I knew in my own bed when he broke into my house. I can guarantee you that if I had used one of these, based on the total lack of support by the police at that time, I would be dead now because the rapist would have come back and killed me.
And this is my personal choice. If other women want to use it, oh well.
All the more reason for some serious digital foreplay.
I am all for the device, and I am male. I really, highly doubt the women that say they would use it against their boyfriend, would actually use it. Most people talk a big game about hurting other people, but when it comes down to it, most people can't stomach the reality. And, if you end up with a women like that in bed, that is your own damn fault for not being more perceptive of people.
I really, highly doubt the women that say they would use it against their boyfriend, would actually use it.

@Gwenny,
Man, you'd have had to have done something PRET-TY nasty to get someone to use this as a retaliatory device!
It's perhaps hard for us to imagine in this country just how prevalent rape is in other parts of the world, so although it's an extreme alternative if it gives someone some comfort I suppose it's an alternative. I wouldn't like to think how someone experiencing this device would react, though.
Man, you'd have had to have done something PRET-TY nasty to get someone to use this as a retaliatory device!
But now nasty? Are we talking physical violence or does lying or cheating justify a woman, in a fit of rage, mutilating her lover?

Perhaps it's hard for you to imagine. I've been raped twice in addition to years of being molested by my stepfather. I can tell you, this not only would not have protected me, it would have gotten me killed in the long run. I've also been in a number of survivors of sexual violence support groups, even in this country that claims to have equality for women, women are victims at a much much higher rate than men. Here's a few US stats for you.
so although it's an extreme alternative if it gives someone some comfort I suppose it's an alternative.
:/ By someone, you mean some woman? And what is the price of this "comfort"--if you can call walking around with a device like that in your vagina can be called a "comfort"? How is this going to heal the violence of men? How is this going to improve the communications between the genders?
When are we going to learn that negative reinforcement might be okay for training your dog (I don't agree, necessarily) but that it TOTALLY FAILS to produce constructive, long term change in humans?
It will scare the @!$%# out of them and the more women that have it the less chance that the men will think it's just all so easy to do it.
What communication is there when they are getting raped remember this country believes men are above women and that's not goinhg to change soon so dn't you think alot of women have suffered enough to have to wait another century or two? Bc this problem is not solving istself nor is it going to change soon.
Ok, aside from igniting innate fears of vagina dentata around the world, how would this work? Are women supposed to wear it all the time? Or only when they expect to be assaulted?
From the site's FAQ for what it's worth ...
When should I wear it? Should you have to travel long distances alone, on a train, working late, going out on a date with someone you don't know too well, going to clubs, or in any situation that you might not feel comfortable or even just not sure.
There's a scene in the book Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson where one of the main characters is wearing something like this except it injects the invading penis with a fast acting tranquiliser, she's a delivery girl. She forgets. It's an interesting scene.
Maybe this should come with a tranquilizer too, given all the comments here along the lines of "the guy will just knife/shoot her when he finds it the hard way".
What crazy books Stephenson wrote. I think Zodiac was my favorite.
I did like Zodiac. Played into all my 70s ecoterrorist treehugging fantasies. LOL But Snow Crash is still my fav.
vagina dentata
Thanks, agio - I think you just came up with the name of the next James Bond beauty! lol
I want a still camera on a guy's face as he discovers the presence of this. Just once. It'd be hilarious.
a possible non rapist, ex boyfriend revenge scenario?: "ha ha, APRIL FOOLS!, NEVA GONNA GET IT." the woman taunted, as the man rolled on the ground in pain taking the fetal position in a pool of blood, "oooh, good one!"
Seriously though, I don't know, I am skeptical that this would be much of a deterrent. For one, the woman would have to wear it ALL THE TIME.... And secondly, after rapists learned about this device, don't you think they would check to see if it was there before insertion?
I was thinking the same thing.
And secondly, after rapists learned about this device, don't you think they would check to see if it was there before insertion?
And more importantly, what would they do after they safely discovered it?
Or more more importantly, what they would do if they unsafely discovered it... Like Steve Watts says below, let's say the rapist has a gun or a knife, and he is already violent, then several teeth jab into the shaft of his penis...this would certainly escalate the situation. I think the victim would get stabbed or shot before they could escape.
Although I think this device would perhaps prevent repeated sexual penetration, it would not necessarily prevent rape and its physical and psychological damage. Most experts will say that rape is more about the exertion of power over the victim than a desire for sexual gratification. So all the things that happen before penetration itself (stalking, threats, physical restraint, clothes ripping, forceable blows, etc.) can be as damaging physically and psychologically as the penetration itself.
I also wonder what would happen after the rapist discovers this thing during penetration and if the subsequent anger and rage would actually place the life of the victim in more danger.
Of course, knowing that women (and I guess men for that matter) may have these devices "installed" might in of itself make a rapist think twice about initiating the rape in the first place, but this would require that the rapist actually know that the device is installed. So perhaps there is an international "Rape Device Installed" symbol that can be worn to signal that the device is present.
I also wonder what would happen after the rapist discovers this thing during penetration and if the subsequent anger and rage would actually place the life of the victim in more danger.
That would concern me too, actually. The FAQ on the page asks "wouldn't you get killed?" and the answer is less than satisfying ("uh, yeah maybe"). The real issue comes up in that light with there being no way to turn it "off."
If you have the device ready to go, and then you're attacked by a man with a gun, do you really want to use it? I would think it would be wiser not to at that point. But by then it's too late, and you'll probably be shot, unless you tell the guy to hold on while you remove it...
And if the rapist knows there is a possibility of it being installed, then I would think many would have no qualms about threatening the victim with additional bodily harm or death if they didn't disclose or remove it, or perhaps do some initial probing with other objects.
Exactly Rollie. It also occurred to me that if a woman removed it (to keep herself from being shot), the rapist could argue that she was receptive to sex and it was therefore consensual. It just seems to open up a whole mess of implications, really...
Uhm, er, I feel uncomfortable asking this, but what do you mean by, (and I guess men for that matter?"
Well.....women are not the only ones who get raped. It's the ole prison joke/warning about "don't bend over to pick up the soap".......
The old Anal Dentada trick.
They could have at least come up with a better name for it.
What about the punch to the face when the rapist gets clamped on??
Here's something else to consider: In order for this device to be effective, the rape must proceed. Therefore, it doesn't stop rape from happening, it makes the rapist check for the device before raping a second time.
I get the distinct feeling that humankind's relationship with these condoms will be a lot like ours with fire - wonderous if controlled, devastating if not. They won't be able to tell the difference between permitted and forced entry.
There's more than one way a man can rape a woman. This is much like solving security risks on the Web. This will stop all the amateurs and idiots, but it won't do a thing against the pros or those determined individuals. You need societal norms for that.
I suppose the woman could wear a button announcing she was so 'armed.' Sort of like those Alarm stickers on windows. Disbelieve at your peril.
*bweep bweep*
electronic female voice:
Rapex armed
*the sound of a garbage disposal running* "Enter at your own risk" label on panties. I'm not gonna check to see if it's real.
This is very odd, and oddly coincidental, since there's a movie coming out about a woman with vaginal dentata.
All in all, this might be a useful anti-rape device.
"I want this guy to be identified. I want a way that will prove that penetration took place," said Ehlers.
Another quick comment: in cultures where women's accusations of rape often fall on deaf ears, this could help bring rapists and potential rapists to justice.
Undoubtedly rapists are deserving but wouldn't this increase the risk of H.I.V. transmission also? I realize that if it works as a female condom there would be a prophylactic effect but that's an area of the male anatomy that would bleed profusely because of the vascular nature of an erection.
I don't think women want a bleeding penis in their vagina.
can't they have an electronic condom that zaps rapists?
Talk about having an Ansab moment.
by the look of it, it wouldn't bleed into anything except the condom itself.
As if a rapist isn't angry man trouble already... how disabling is this really? There have been quite a few stories where (sorry guys) the penis has been actually cut off and the man was still pretty lively. I would be afraid to deploy this device for fear of making a bad situation worse.
Put salt in it. I don't care how "lively" he is after that, he won't be thinking about beating her! And after you catch the bastard, he should have his penis permanently nailed to a rail road tie. Unfortunately, ladies, the only thing that really stops rape is life in prison without possibility of parole. Sex offenders (all of them) are unredeamable, uncureable preditors on human society.
They should make one that does not seem to affect the guy while he is doing it but later makes it shrivel up and drop off.
that way the savage will not get mad and kill her right away like this is likely to cause.
all I can say that hasn't already been said is...
oww.
Now, I can't imagine ever raping someone, and I agree that rapists should be punished brutally, but that just looks painful. You can't be a guy and look at that without cringing.
i've heard of women forgetting they have tampons in, so hopefully noone ever forgets this thing is in before consensual sex.
also, do they make one for the anus? the rapist might see the vaginal one and go for another opening instead...
also men could then use it...like in prison maybe.
ouch.
That is extremely disturbing. Might give rapest a good lesson.
On the topic of using this device as a form of protection against rape:
Most people are raped by someone they know. Fully 74% of rape victims (in America) know the aggressor, with 28% being in an intimate relationship with that person. Rape means non-consensual sex, even when it's with someone you might otherwise consent to sleeping with.
I think women have a right to defend themselves, and I think the use of this device is justified. Rape is sufficiently nasty an act that this sort of instant counterattack seems within reason. But it clearly isn't going to fix the problem in society: if it's coming into play, a sexual act has already taken place. What it does do is make it a lot more difficult for a rapist to get away with it (I imagine showing up to the hospital with one of these attached would be something of a warning sign). It's not about prevention (society as a whole must address that issue, though the signs over the last few decades are encouraging) - it's about apprehending perpetrators.
On the topic of 'normal' people using this device as a form of revenge rather than as a form of protection:
It's full of spikes that require a doctor to remove. I imagine it will cause lasting damage and discomfort. Anyone willing to "weaponize" this as a part of their relationship is both violating trust and harming their partner. It's about as morally defensible as getting someone naked and them stabbing them a little bit. Or spraying them with mace a little bit. If that's what passes for normal in the bedroom nowadays, I'm living a charmed life.
it's better than what we've got now -
i've always wondered what devices or anti-rape laws would be in effect if men were raped as easily and frequently as women. would this device be nearly as controversial if men had to endure the same threat of rape looming over them in every poorly lit parking garage or dark street?
While I do not understand rapist, I believe rapist don't just rape one woman.
I think this device will ultimately cause victims of serial rapist great harm. I would propose some similar item that would mark the culprit and the victim (unfortunately), perhaps a blue dye or something that is not immediately apparent to the rapist.
However (fence sitting here) for those one-off rapists. I think this will see quite a few more men in jail.
What happens if the user were to infect the "barbs" with some type of "poison" for lack of a better word?
I don't think I will be advocating this (rapex) to my daughters.
i dont know if its been mentioned before, but wouldn't guys learn to just use their finger first?
I agree you can't see it like a diaphragm so they'd learn to look in a different way. I think it should be a shock and/or tranquilizer that will be enough damage to make it so he can't get it up again, cause once they start they don't stop.
I know guys who would pay extra for this.
